About the Labyrinth:

The Garden’s current labyrinth was created by Carys S. as an Eagle scout project. She created the design and laid the stumps out herself, after they were cut by her mentor. From the moment it was installed, visitors took notice. The labyrinth served as the focal point for meditations, field trips, and more. It was added to the national Labyrinth Locators site and brought a new demographic to the Garden, including certified labyrinth facilitators leading walks.

The enormous response to this labyrinth led us to include a permanent labyrinth in Phase 3 of the final Garden plans, based on the labyrinth at Chartres. We are also working with the Architecture students at UVA to create finger labyrinths to provide in the Garden before the permanent labyrinth arrives.

Nature is already reclaiming the tree stumps Carys laid. As we head into Phase I construction this summer the site of the current labyrinth will become part of the pedestrian bridge. This bridge will enable visitors to easily access the Garden’s land on the other side of the stream. We will say goodbye to the current labyrinth with a special ritual and final Labyrinth Walk on Saturday, June 20th from 5:30-7pm. We hope you can join us for this official farewell and take some time to enjoy this favorite feature on your own before mid-July. This labyrinth truly united our community in a special moment of joy, grounding, and discovery. We look forward to taking you forward through more phases of the Garden’s growth with new iterations of labyrinths, collaborations, and connection.
